Rules and Regulations

1.1 Terms and Conditions

1. This competition is open to all UTP students.

2. Each group should consist of minimum 5 and maximum 8 students, male and female students are allowed to be in one group.

3. Each group is required to pay a registration fee of RM80.

4. All lyrics must not imply/contain any expletives.

5. The contents of any song lyrics MUST NOT contain elements regarding politics, religions and any sensitive issues.

6. Contestants are required to submit lyrics for the songs of their choice to the organizing committee for censorship by FRIDAY (13th MARCH 2009) for Preliminary and MONDAY (6th APRIL 2009) for Final.

7. A participant cannot be involved in more than TWO bands.

8. If a musical group damages any instrument provided during the practice sessions or competition, the group must pay for the cost of damage.

9. Ground rules are subjected to the code of conduct of UTP.

10. Rules and regulations are subjected to change by the organizing committee. Any changes will be informed as soon as possible.

1.2 Format (Preliminary)

1. Musical groups will go through 2 days of preliminary rounds on 3rd and 4th April 2009 before making it to the final round on 10th April 2009.

2. Musical groups will be given 5 minutes to get ready on the stage and 10 minutes to compete in the preliminary round.

3. Only 5 groups will be chosen for the finale. The top 4 groups based on the judges’ marks will advance automatically. The 5th group will be chosen from the list of bands ranked 5th to 8th from the judges’ marks, solely based on STUDENTS’ CHOICE. Students can vote for their favorite band from the list of top 5th to 8th bands. Voting will commence immediately on the spot after the preliminary rounds, lasting up to 2 hours. Students who wish to vote are required to present their MATRIC CARD. Each student is entitled to ONE vote only.

4. Each musical group is required to perform TWO songs in both preliminary and final rounds. For both rounds, AT LEAST ONE ENGLISH SONG must be performed.

5. Preliminary round (1st song)

Musical groups are required to choose and perform a song from the list of compulsory songs. Please refer to Appendix A.

Preliminary round (2nd song)

Musical groups are required to perform a song of their own choice. New arrangements of songs composed by the competitors are allowed. (Participants can choose either Malay or English songs.)

6. Musical groups are encouraged to include any ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENT which is not common in a band (i.e. violin, flute, saxophone, kompang, trumpet, cello etc) in their performances. Extra points will be awarded to groups performing with these instruments.

7. Musical groups are not encouraged to perform a medley song for the preliminary rounds, else points will be deducted.

8. Each musical group MUST REGISTER AT THE BEGINNING OF THEIR PRELIMINARY SESSION, STRICTLY WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF THE REGISTRATION TIME. Musical groups are also given 5 MINUTES ONLY to come up on stage after the name of their group is announced by the MC. Failure to do the above will result in an automatic DISQUALIFICATION. Please contact the Euphonious committee if you have any problem pertaining to the registration time.

1.3 Format (Final)

1. Only five musical groups are chosen for the finals.

2. Musical groups will be given 10 minutes to compete in the final round.

3. Each musical group is required to perform TWO songs. Please note that AT LEAST ONE ENGLISH SONG must be performed.

4. Final round (1st song)

Musical groups are required to choose and perform a song from the list of compulsory songs. Please refer to Appendix A.

Final round (2nd song)

Musical groups are required to perform a song of their own choice. New arrangements of songs composed by the competitors are allowed. Medleys are also allowed. (Participants can choose either Malay or English songs.)

5. Each musical group must ensure that there is a clear cut between the first and second song.

6. After the second round, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th runner-ups will be announced. The top two bands will be subjected to perform a 3rd song.

7. Final round (3rd song)

Musical groups are required to perform a song of their OWN CHOICE INSTRUMENTALLY, without any vocalist for 3 minutes. New arrangements of songs composed by the competitors are allowed. Medleys are also allowed. (Participants can choose either Malay or English songs.) However, marks obtained for the previous two songs will be zeroed and the winner will be selected from the top two bands solely based on the 3rd instrumental song.

8. Musical groups are encouraged to include any ADDITIONAL INSTRUMENT which is not common in a band (i.e. violin, flute, saxophone, kompang, trumpet, cello etc) in their performances. Extra points will be awarded to groups performing with these instruments.

Note: When a musical group exceeds the time limit, a penalty of 2 marks will be deducted for every 1 minute.

PRELIMINARY ROUND

1. For the preliminary round, all bands will be judged 100% by the appointed judges.

2. The recipients of the following awards will be chosen by the judges during the preliminary rounds:

a) BEST VOCALIST

b) BEST DRUMMER

c) BEST GUITARIST

d) BEST BASS GUITARIST

e) BEST KEYBOARDIST

f) BEST ACCOMPANIST

NO VOTING SYSTEM FOR THESE 6 CATEGORIES. The winners will be announced and awarded during the finals.

FINAL ROUND

For the final round, the distribution of points is as follow:

a) 70% by professional judges

b) 30% by students voting
